Located between La Alcaidesa and Sotogrande in San Roque, Faro de Carbonera is much more than a lighthouse—it’s a living testament to centuries of maritime history and innovative restoration on the Costa del Sol.
A Glimpse into History
Originally constructed in 1588 as an almenara (watchtower) at Punta Mala, this truncated conical stone tower was commissioned by King Felipe II. With its single door-window and vaulted room, it once served as a vigilant lookout along the coast.

From Watchtower to Lighthouse
Decades later, as maritime signaling evolved, the tower was selected for adaptation into a modern lighthouse. In 1989, the award-winning project by engineer Carlos Prieto and architect Enrique Martínez Tercero introduced a modern external spiral staircase—carefully juxtaposed against the original structure rendered in sand-colored mortar. Today, the lighthouse features a lantern with a drum optic and an electrical lighting system, with a focal plane 39 meters above sea level, emitting two white occultations every 4 seconds over a 14‑mile range.
Cultural Significance and Conservation
Faro de Carbonera is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural, recognized under Spanish heritage law and included in the General Catalog of Andalusian Historical Heritage. Its restoration not only preserved a piece of 16th‑century history but also integrated it into the modern maritime signaling system, ensuring its legacy endures.

Location and Visitor Information
Nestled just meters from the beach and adjacent to the ruins of an old Guardia Civil barracks—and with a WWII-era concrete bunker nearby—the lighthouse stands as a silent witness to both its military past and the region’s ongoing evolution. Although it isn’t currently open for guided visits, the area around Sotogrande offers several dirt roads leading to scenic beaches where you can admire its majesty from afar.
