On June 11, 2025, the UK, Spain, Gibraltar, and the EU reached a landmark political agreement to eliminate the physical border between Gibraltar and Spain, marking the end of passport checks and the symbolic “Verja” fence.
What Changes?

The daily crossing for 15,000+ workers will be easier with the removal of physical border controls. Pedestrians and drivers will move freely between Gibraltar and La Línea.
2. Schengen Controls Relocate
All passport checks shift to Gibraltar’s airport and port. Spanish officers will perform Schengen controls there, enabling an open land border.
3. Schengen Integration
Gibraltar will follow Schengen rules for land entry. EU citizens will enjoy free movement, and UK nationals in Gibraltar will benefit from simplified access into Spain.
4. Customs Union
Goods will flow without checks thanks to a new customs union, removing tariffs and reducing red tape for cross-border trade.
5. Tax Alignment
Gibraltar will introduce indirect taxes similar to EU norms—ending price gaps on goods like tobacco and discouraging smuggling.
6. Sovereignty Stays Intact
The UK retains full sovereignty and control over Gibraltar. Military and legal jurisdictions remain unchanged.
7. Shared Standards
The treaty includes commitments on labor rights, environment, taxation, and cooperation on security and justice.
8. What’s Next?
This is a political deal. A binding treaty is expected in autumn 2025 and will require approval by UK, Spanish, and EU institutions.
