San Roque Golf: Four More Exceptional Clubs Near Alcaidesa | Part 2

Aug 13, 2026

San Roque offers one of the greatest concentrations of high-quality golf in Southern Spain.

Across the municipality, eight golf clubs and nine principal courses provide an exceptional variety of landscapes, designs and playing experiences. Some are known for their international tournament history, while others stand out for their community spirit, natural surroundings or spectacular Mediterranean views.

Following the first part of our guide, we continue with The San Roque Club, San Roque Golf & Resort, Club de Golf La Cañada and La Hacienda Links Golf Resort.

5. The San Roque Club

The San Roque Club occupies a peaceful setting surrounded by mature cork oaks and gently rolling Andalusian countryside.

Its Old Course is recognised for its strategic layout and important place in European golf history. It hosted 15 consecutive European Tour Qualifying Schools between 1993 and 2007, as well as the 2005 Spanish Open.

A Course with Tournament Heritage

Over the years, many golfers who later achieved success on the international circuit competed at The San Roque Club.

The Old Course requires careful course management, particularly around its tree-lined fairways and well-protected greens. Mature vegetation frames the holes and creates a sense of privacy throughout the round.

Its design encourages players to think strategically from the tee, balancing distance with the need to maintain a favourable position for the next shot.

A Renewed Private Club Experience

The club has undergone an extensive renovation of its course and facilities, combining its established identity with a more contemporary level of service.

Its clubhouse, practice facilities, academy, dining areas and accommodation create an environment designed not only for playing golf but also for socialising and relaxing.

This balance between sporting tradition and modern facilities gives The San Roque Club a distinctive position within the local golf landscape.

6. San Roque Golf & Resort

San Roque Golf & Resort offers a technically demanding course in a setting overlooking the Mediterranean and an adjacent protected natural reserve.

The course was designed by Perry Dye in collaboration with Spanish golf legend Severiano Ballesteros. It has hosted major events, including the 2006 Spanish Open and several European Tour Qualifying School finals.

A Strategic and Visually Distinctive Course

The 18-hole course extends across approximately 45 hectares of carefully shaped terrain.

Deep bunkers, large greens, changes in elevation and characteristic railway sleepers contribute to its distinctive visual identity. Several holes require players to carefully evaluate risk and reward, particularly when water or steep changes in terrain come into play.

Although the course presents a serious challenge, the variety of the layout allows golfers of different levels to enjoy the experience from the appropriate tees.

Golf Beside a Protected Natural Area

One of the defining characteristics of San Roque Golf & Resort is its natural backdrop.

The neighbouring reserve provides habitat for local species and adds a green, relatively undeveloped landscape around the course. Mediterranean views appear throughout the round, creating a strong connection between the game and its coastal surroundings.

This combination of technical design and natural beauty makes the resort a valuable addition to the wider selection of golf courses near Alcaidesa.

7. Club de Golf La Cañada

Club de Golf La Cañada represents a different but equally important side of golf in San Roque.

The club was founded in 1982 through the initiative of local caddies who worked at Real Club de Golf Sotogrande and wanted a place where they could practise the sport themselves.

With the support of San Roque Town Council, La Cañada developed into Spain’s first municipal golf course and became an important centre for grassroots golf.

Two Distinctive Nine-Hole Layouts

The 18-hole, par-71 course is divided into two contrasting sections.

Nine holes were designed by Dave Thomas and offer a relatively open layout with wide fairways and fast greens. The other nine were created by Robert Trent Jones Senior, incorporating cork oaks, elevation changes and more demanding tee shots.

This combination gives the course considerable variety. Players must adapt their strategy as the landscape changes from open fairways to tighter and more technically demanding holes.

Developing New Generations of Golfers

La Cañada is particularly known for its municipal golf school and its contribution to the development of young players.

The club has trained golfers who have gone on to compete at national, international and professional levels. It continues to offer programmes for both younger players and adults beginning their involvement in the sport.

Its accessibility and community-focused identity distinguish it from the area’s private resort clubs while reinforcing San Roque’s broader golfing culture.

8. La Hacienda Links Golf Resort

La Hacienda Links Golf Resort brings our journey directly back to Alcaidesa.

Located beside the Mediterranean, the resort offers two clearly differentiated 18-hole championship courses: the Links and the Heathland. Together, they provide 36 holes of golf with views towards the sea, Gibraltar and the North African coastline.

The Links Course

The Links course follows the contours of the coastal landscape, with broad fairways, strategically positioned bunkers and open views across the Mediterranean.

Its seaside location exposes players to changing wind conditions, meaning that the same hole can present a different challenge from one day to another.

The course combines relatively generous landing areas with demanding approach shots, particularly where the terrain, bunkers or coastal conditions influence the route towards the green.

Its setting is one of its most important characteristics. Few courses in Southern Spain offer such a direct visual relationship with the Mediterranean, Gibraltar and the distant coast of Africa.

The Heathland Course

The Heathland course provides a contrasting inland experience.

Its design combines wide, gently sloping fairways with more undulating sections and elevated viewpoints. The par-three holes are particularly demanding, requiring concentration and accurate club selection from the tee.

While it retains the broad Mediterranean views associated with the resort, its changing terrain gives the Heathland a noticeably different rhythm from the coastal Links course.

This contrast allows residents and visitors to enjoy two complete golf experiences within the same resort.

Golf, Gastronomy and Coastal Living

La Hacienda Links Golf Resort also includes a contemporary clubhouse, practice facilities, dining areas and leisure spaces overlooking the coastline.

Its position within Alcaidesa makes it especially relevant to local property owners. Residents can combine access to championship golf with nearby beaches, residential communities and connections to Sotogrande and Gibraltar.

For those seeking a home centred around golf and the Mediterranean, La Hacienda represents the clearest expression of the Alcaidesa lifestyle.

San Roque: Eight Clubs and an Exceptional Golf Lifestyle

The four clubs featured in this second part complete a remarkably diverse golfing destination.

The San Roque Club provides tournament history and a refined private club environment. San Roque Golf & Resort combines technical golf with protected natural surroundings. La Cañada represents community, accessibility and the development of new players, while La Hacienda Links Golf Resort places championship golf directly beside the Mediterranean in Alcaidesa.

Together with the four clubs featured in Part 1, they demonstrate why San Roque is considered one of the most complete golf destinations in Spain.
